Name: Jude Canon
Profession: Cancer Research Scientist
What city or neighborhood do you live in? Venice/Marina Del Rey
What is your proudest accomplishment? The friends that I have made in my life
What’s your favorite thing about L.A.? Its diversity
How long have you been a member of InterAct? 2 years
How did you hear about LAANE? Through my friend Greg Good
Which of our campaigns interests you the most? Feel free to pick more than one.
All of them, especially these two: 1) Winning living wages for hotel workers and 2) Making our city’s waste and recycling program safer and more environmentally conscious
LAANE is often fighting for workers’ right to a “living wage.” What does “living wage” mean to you, not necessarily in dollars but in results?
That each person who works hard is able to receive fair and appropriate benefits, such as healthcare and compensation, that allows and empowers him/her to live a balanced and rewarding life.
Our Don’t Waste LA campaign is fighting for improvements to the city’s waste industry, including better recycling for apartment buildings and businesses. What improvements do you think the city’s recycling program needs?
Comprehensive access to recycling bins for large apartment complexes and businesses.
When you think about where to spend your dollars, do you take into account the company’s policies, whether environmental, political or worker-related? Can you give an example?
Yes, absolutely. I don’t ever shop at Walmart because I believe they oppress and take advantage of their employees.
What does a “new economy” mean to you?
One in which all have access and rights to be fairly compensated, even rewarded, for their honest and earnest work.
What makes you hopeful about L.A.’s future?
Greg Good and LAANE.
