Report Shows Port Clean Trucks Program Will Provide Major Benefits to the L.A. Region
The Road to Shared ProsperityIn late August, in anticipation of an upcoming vote by harbor commissioners on a landmark program to overhaul the region’s port trucking system to meet new clean air requirements, LAANE released The Road to Shared Prosperity: The Regional Economic Benefits of the San Pedro Bay Ports’ Clean Trucks Program. The report estimates the San Pedro Ports’ proposed Clean Trucks Program will generate $4.2 billion in benefits to the region over the next five years. Currently, thousands of impoverished port truck drivers are misclassified as independent operators and lack the means to properly maintain their trucks. More

Poverty, Jobs, and the Los Angeles EconomyOn August 28, less than a week before Labor Day, LAANE released Poverty, Jobs, and the Los Angeles Economy: An Analysis of U.S. Census Data and the Challenges Facing Our Region. Study Calls on Airport Commission to Address Problem of Undertrained, Understaffed and
Poorly Compensated Workforce

In July, workers, disability rights activists and senior advocates joined with LAANE to announce the release of a report examining passenger services at Los Angeles International Airport. Based primarily on a survey of 300 workers, Under the Radar: How Airline Outsourcing of Passenger Services Compromises Security and Service Quality at LAX offers an alarming picture of how airlines’ low-bid contracting system is undermining security and service quality, especially for disabled and elderly travelers. The report illustrates how changes in the airline industry have led to a proliferation of low-bid contracting for passenger services at LAX and other airports around the nation. The report marks the launch of a new LAANE campaign, in partnership for the first time with disability rights advocates, as well as labor and seniors’ groups, to raise the quality of passenger service and the quality of jobs for the service workers.
