2005 City of Justice Awards Dinner
LAANE’s 2005 City of Justice Awards Dinner was a rousing success, boasting a full house of elected officials, labor and
community leaders, allies and supporters. LAANE exceeded its financial goals for the event, a result of its growth, effectiveness and the broader base that it has reached out to in recent years.
Held at the Biltmore Hotel downtown, the event began with a stirring performance of gospel songs by the Gwen Wyatt Chorale. Following Cecil Murray’s impassioned oratory about social justice and the work that lies ahead, emcees Alex Padilla and Amy Wakeland greeted the crowd and introduced the honorees: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, California Teachers Association President Barbara Kerr, Congresswoman Hilda Solis (who was unable to attend) and filmmaker Robert Greenwald and his Brave New Films Team.
As a special highlight of the evening, the workers of the Biltmore—who were part of a difficult but successful citywide effort by hotel workers to win better wages, benefits and a 2006 contract expiration—came onstage to a standing ovation. The event was capped off by a poignant film tribute to the late labor leader Miguel Contreras, a co-founder of LAANE and a champion of workers rights who was a friend and inspiration to many in attendance. His widow, Maria Elena Durazo, President of UNITE HERE Local 11, accepted an award in his honor and spoke about carrying on his tradition of service and commitment to create a better, more just Los Angeles.
