LAANE is known for its broad-based labor/environmental/community coalitions and its combination of organizing, research, communications, and policy development. LAANE led the movement to pass a Living Wage Ordinance in the city of L.A. in 1997, helped develop and champion the community benefits and construction careers models for publicly-funded development projects, helped design and usher in the landmark Clean Trucks Program at the Port of Los Angeles, and continues to advocate for progressive policies that benefit low-wage workers, the environment, and low-income communities. Campaign Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time research/policy analyst to research and develop strategies for a project to positively transform the waste and recycling industry in the LA County region. This project seeks to:
- Achieve the most environmentally and resource-sustainable, next-generation waste and recycling system for the City of LA and across the region;
- Achieve economic justice, and higher health and safety standards, for the thousands of low-wage, mostly immigrant, workers throughout the regional industry;
- Achieve Zero Waste – as a goal and reality – in the City of LA, and across the region;
- Achieve environmental justice for communities around waste and recycling facilities, who are currently plagued by devastating environmental and health impacts.

Campaign Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time experienced organizer for a campaign to win justice for workers in the port trucking industry at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. These are the largest ports in the country, responsible for nearly half of all U.S. containerized trade. This campaign seeks to:
- Achieve economic justice for the 12,000 low-wage, mostly immigrant truck drivers —most of whom are denied legal rights by being misclassified as “independent contractors”;
- Build from the dramatic environmental gains of the Clean Truck Program, to ensure environmental justice for the hundreds of thousands of people who live around the Ports and along associated goods movement corridors, who are currently plagued by devastating health impacts;
- Link efforts with a national program to achieve similar changes at all other major ports across the country.
Position Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Campaign Director, the Community Organizer is responsible for
- Leading efforts for community outreach, recruitment, education and grassroots political action in Los Angeles and Long Beach port communities;
- Coordinating activities with coalition partners and building coalition membership;
- Coordinating the content and logistics for public events & large-scale mobilizations; and
- Connecting organizing work with research and public policy staff on the campaign.
Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to economic justice and the labor movement. Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary and ability to work independently. Skills required:
