Women Making History in Hollywood

ACLU leader Ramona Ripston and actor/activist Maria Bello headlined LAANE’s Women for a New Los Angeles Luncheon on June 3 at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel.

In an emotional speech, Ripston described her journey from suburban housewife to one of the country’s most respected civil liberties advocates. Bello, who gave LAANE’s Women for a New Los Angeles award to Ripston, offered a tribute to the ACLU leader’s myriad contributions to social justice.

The event -- the largest annual progressive women’s gathering in the region -- drew more than 400 people and featured the premiere of a new video on L.A.’s food deserts, “A Tale of Two Women: Crossing L.A.’s Grocery Divide.” Theater artist Jude Narita performed vignettes from her powerful one-woman shows, and LAANE deputy director Roxana Tynan spoke about how motherhood has changed her view of the world.
